What "global remote" really means

A job that says "work from anywhere" is not always open to literally everyone. Before you apply, check three things.

Hiring location

Some employers can hire in any country; others only in places where they have a legal entity or use an employer-of-record service. If the posting lists countries or regions, those are the real limits. If it says "worldwide" but asks for a specific time-zone overlap, that overlap is a requirement too.

How you will be paid

Global roles are often contractor positions paid by invoice, bank transfer or a payment platform, though some employers hire employees through an employer-of-record. Ask which applies, which currency you will be paid in, and who handles taxes. Our glossary of remote work terms explains contractor, employee, W-2, 1099 and employer-of-record in plain language.

Time zones

Many global teams run asynchronously, which means you can work at different hours from your colleagues. Others expect a few hours of overlap each day. Our guides on working across time zones and asynchronous communication show how distributed teams manage this.

Tips for applying from outside the US

If you are an international student in the United States, read remote work and international students first, as rules about working while in the US are specific and strict.
